Dear readers,

This issue of the Journal of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy contains scientific articles presented by the participants of the International Conference on Metallurgy and Materials – ICMM’16, held on 26 - 28 September, 2016, in Sofia.

The main organizer of the conference was the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Sofia, together with co-organizers Bulgarian Association of the Metallurgical Industry and the Scientific and Technical Council for Mining, Geology and Metallurgy. The main sponsor of the conference were AURUBIS, Bulgaria, KCM 2000 AD, as well as ALKOMET, SOFIA MED, STOMANA INDUSTRY S.A., ETEM. The conference was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Education and Science and Sofia Municipality. More than 150 participants represented national and foreign partner universities and leading industrial companies from 12 countries (Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Finland and Bulgaria).

The conference has been attended by Mr. Guy Tiran, Director General of Eurometaux (European Association of Metals) and Mr. Axel Eggert, Director General of Eurofer (European Steel Association), who presented the latest trends in industry. The event included several key panel discussions devoted to: metallurgy and materials; environmental engineering; modeling and simulation; automation; ferrous and non-ferrous industry.

This special event gave the opportunity to education, science and business to meet and to share the achievements and trends in all spheres of contemporary metallurgical and materials science, as well as to discuss possible horizons on a world-wide scale.

The Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy in Sofia is the only one in Bulgaria for training highly qualified professionals for metallurgy (production, casting, plastic deformation and thermal treatment of ferrous and nonferrous metals, their conversion into end products, improvement of the existing and development of new processing furnaces for metal production and processing, improvement of energy and ecological efficiency of industrial production), as well as in the field of new materials and technologies.

The articles published in this issue are related to the development of innovative technologies, nanomaterials, technology of materials processing, modeling and ecology. I wish the readers of the journal new scientific achievements and may optimism be the “alloy” of our prosperity striving!
