The Department of Programming and Computer System Application teaches the course “Informatics I” and “Informatics II” to students with all majors at BSc. level; “Microprocessor devices” to students at BSc. level with majors in “Automation and information technologies”; “Informatics” (in German) to students at BSc. level with major in “Chemical Engineering”; “Expert Systems” to master students with major in “Chemical Engineering”; “Informatics II” (in French) to master students with major in “Industrial chemistry”; “Information Technologies” (in English) to master students with major in “Material Science”; “Programming in Java” to master students with majors in “Automation and information technologies” and “Information Technologies”; the course “Internet Information Technologies and Databases” is an elective course for all master students; the course “Information technologies of scientific research” is an elective course for all PhD. students. The Department is accredited for teaching PhD. students with major in “Informatics”.

The Department develops the following areas of research: Web-based information systems and databases, Modeling of technological processes, E-learning. A total of 15 faculty members work at the Department: 2 Associate Professors, 13 Assistant Professors (6 of the members have PhD. degree). The distribution of the fields of specialization is as follows: 2 Associate Professors and 6 Assistant Professors are specialized in “Web-based information systems and databases” and “E-learning”; 7 Assistant Professors are specialized in “Modeling of technological processes”. The educational and research activities of the Department are carried out in 4 labs for students at BSc. level and 1 lab for PhD. students and students at MSc. level.

The courses taught at the Department of Mathematics during the first year of education of all students at BSc. level are “Mathematics 1” and “Mathematics 2”. The courses provide knowledge in the field of linear algebra, analytical geometry, real analysis, differential equations and theory of probabilities. The course “Numerical methods” is taught during the second year of education at BSc. level to all students except those with majors in “Metallurgy”, “Materials Science” and “Ecology”. The Department provides the courses “Mathematics 1”, “Mathematics 2, “Mathematics 3”, “Mathematics 4” and “Numerical methods” for students at BSc. level with major in „Chemical Engineering”. The teaching is in German. The courses “Mathematics 1”, “Mathematics 2, “Mathematics 3”, “Mathematics 4” and “Numerical methods” are read in French to students at MSc. level with major in “Industrial chemistry”. Members of the staff read in Bulgarian the elective courses „Numerical methods in engineering research” and „Applied Mathematics” to students at MSc. level. A free elective course “Tensor calculus” is provided for all PhD. students. The Department can train PhD. students in the field of „Differential equations”, „Mathematical modeling” and „Operational research”.

The scientific research at the Department is focused to the following branches: „Qualitative theory of differential equations”, „Mathematical modeling of dynamical processes”, „Optimization methods”, „Recent training methods in mathematics”.Staff members of the Department of Mathematic have also research activities in the area of “Print and pre-print of specialized text”, “Formatting on special text-processors”, “Mathematical analysis of data”, “Topology and building of nets”. The staff of the Department of Mathematics includes 2 Associate Professors and 9 Assistant Professors (four of the latter have PhD.). The Department has two laboratories on numerical methods.

The Department of Applied Mechanics [10] trains students from all undergraduate majors in "Mechanics” and “Technical drawing”. The students with major in "Metallurgy” and “Materials Science" are read the course "Mechanics”. They have a project as well. At MSc. level the students of the same majors are read the courses "Finite Element Method", "Mechanics of Materials" and "3D-CAD". The Department carries out training in "Mechanics", "Technical Drawing", "Resistance of Materials", "Numerical Methods" and "Machine elements" - in French, in "Mechanics – I”, “Mechanics II”, “Mechanics III" and "Elements of structures and machines I”, “Elements of structures and machines II" - in German, in "Mechanics", "Technical Drawing", "Finite Element Method" and "Mechanics of the project” in English for students with major in “Materials Science”. The Department is accredited for doctoral studies in 01.02.02 - Applied Mechanics /including Tribology/. The areas of scientific researches refer to: Mechanical behavior of construction materials in conditions of aggressive media, temperatures and variable loads, Homogenization of composites, Robotics, Nonlinear mechanics of structures and materials, Tribology, Investigation and optimization of gears, Demolition. The Department employs 2 Professors, 7 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors (one of them has a PhD. degree), 1 Assistant (a PhD. student). The Department has 2 laboratories for educational and research activities and 3 rooms for computer graphics.

At the Department of Physics all students at BSc. level are educated in three courses “General Physics”, “General Physics and Solid State Physics” and “Physics of Semiconductors”. Foreign language courses are included in the Department program: “Physics” and “Material Science” course to students from Industrial Chemistry taught in French, “Physics” in German to Chemical Engineers-students and “Solid State Physics”, “Microstructure of the materials” and “Amorphous and glassy semiconductors” in English to the Material Science-students. The Department is skilled in PhD. students teaching in the following scientific disciplines: 01.03.25- Structure, mechanical and thermal properties of condensed matter and 01.03.26- Electrical, magnetic and optical properties of condensed matter. The object and the mission of the education in these subjects is defined by the fundamental significance of physics in the present-day chemistry, metallurgy, material science, ecology and biotechnology, as well by the physical ideology of the present analytical methods of structural, chemical and phase analysis of the materials. A number of regions of the scientific research are developed in the Department: Condensed mater physics, High energy physics, High frequency relativistic electronic, Methods of physics education. The Department staff consists of 11 lecturers: 5 Assoc. Professors, 6 Assistant Professors (one of them has PhD.). In scientific competence they are divided in: Condensed mater Physics - 3 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors; High energy Physics - 1 Associate Professor; High frequency relativistic electronics - 1 Associate Professor; Methods of the physical education - 3 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors. The Department facilitates include 5 laboratories, where educational and scientific work is carried out including 3 educational laboratories in General Physics, 1 laboratory in Physics of Semiconductors and 1 laboratory in Physics of thin-films.

The members of Department of Physics have activities in science-applied area concerning: repairs of vacuum installations and non-conventional equipment for measurements; measurements of physical parameters of bulk and thin film materials as density, hardness, thickness of the films, electrical resistance and optical characteristics; interpretation and computer treatment of data from transmission electron microscopy analysis, electron scattering and electron probe microanalysis of crystalline and amorphous bulk materials and thin films; interpretation of DTA data.

The staff of Section “Electrotechnics and Electronics” gives lectures to all students at BSc. level (without those with major in Automatics and information technologies) in “Electrotechnics and Electronics”; the course “Electrotechnics and Electronics” is read in German to students at BSc. level with major in Chemical Engineering and in French to students at MSc. level with major in Industrial chemistry. The courses “Electrotechnics I” and “Electrotechnics II”, “Electronics”, “Electrical measurements” and “Digital techniques” are read to students at BSc. level with major in Automatics and information technologies; the course “Electrical safety and mechanical risks” is provided for students at MSc. level with major in Security and protection in cases of disasters and accidents; the course “Measurements and material tests – I part (Electrical quantities)” is provided for students at MSc. level with major in “Metrology”. The Section is accredited for PhD. education in 2 research areas: “Electrical technology” (02.04.13) and “Industrial electronics” (02.20.09). The staff of the Section includes 2 Associate Professors and 5 Assistant Professors. There are 4 laboratories for educational and research activities at the Section: 2 laboratories on “Electrotechnics and electronics”, 1 laboratory on “Electrical measurements” and “Theoretical electrotechnics” and 1 laboratory on “Electrical machines and equipments”.

Several are the research areas that are developed at the Section. They are as follows: methods and devices of electrical technology; industrial electronics; automatic control of electrical drives and technological processes; theoretical electrotechnics; electrical equipment; methods in electrotechnical disciplines education.
